Iran wins major infrastructure contract in Iraq

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

BAGHDAD — Iraq has awarded a vital infrastructure contract to Iran that could facilitate its military presence in a developoment that has alarmed the U.S.
The Iraqi Electricity Ministry has selected companies from China and Iran to construct two power plants. The ministry said the awards totaled $1.1 billion and would reduce the constant power outages in Baghdad.
The award to Iran for the construction of a 160-megawatt power plant in Baghdad's Sadr City has alarmed the U.S. military in Iraq. Military sources said the U.S.-led coalition was concerned that Iran could use the $150 million project to significantly expand its intelligence and military presence in Iraq.
Iran has sought to dominate Iraq's Shi'ite sector. Teheran has agreed to provide cheap electricity from its own grid to Shi'ite areas of southern Iraq. Iran has also offered to build a large power plant without cost to the Baghdad government between the Shi'ite cities of Karbala and Najaf.
The Chinese power plant would be located in the Iraqi province of Wasit. Officials said the 1,300 megawatt facility, awarded to China's Shanghai Heavy Industry, would cost $940 million.

Another Liberal Noose-ance - By Ann Coulter

Posted: 10/17/2007
Liberals are so invigorated by the story about a noose being found on an obscure Columbia University professor's door that now nooses are popping up all over New York City. Liberals love to make believe the Night Riders are constantly at their doors.
I'll be shocked by a noose appearing on a college campus the day an actual racist does it.
Could Columbia at least produce one student or professor who supports racism before holding another "rally against racism"? Every concrete example of the racism allegedly sweeping the nation's campuses keeps turning out to be a fraud. Far from "institutional racism," there is "institutional racial hoaxism" run amok in this country. Will anyone rally against that? Out of legions, here are just a few hoax hate crimes on college campuses.
-- In 1997, at Duke University, a black doll was found hanging by a noose from a tree at the precise spot where the Black Student Alliance was to be holding a rally against racism. Two black students later admitted they were the culprits and were immediately praised for bringing attention to the problem of racism on campus. Indeed, four years later the president of Duke gave a baccalaureate address nostalgically describing the hoax as a "protest" against racism. Next stop: the Nobel Peace Prize.
-- In 2003, vile racial epithets were scrawled on the dorm room doors at Ole Miss, producing mass protests and a "Say No to Racism" march. And then it turned out the graffiti had been written by black students, against whom no charges were brought. A "Say Yes to Racism" rally at Ole Miss was later canceled due to lack of interest.
-- In 2005, obscenity-laced racist and anti-Semitic messages appeared on dormitory walls at the College of Wooster in Ohio. The fliers were instantly blamed on "typical white males," even though all the letter I's in the epithets were dotted with little hearts. Breadcrumbs left by the culprits included the message "Vote Goldwater" among the obscenities. The matter was dropped and flushed down the memory hole when the perpetrators turned out to be a group of leftist students led by a black studies major.
-- Just this year, anti-Muslim fliers were put out on the George Washington University campus -- by leftists, including a member of "Iraq Veterans Against War." When it was thought the leaflets were from the conservative group Young Americans For Freedom, the dean called for the expulsion of the culprits and the university demanded that YAF officers sign a statement disavowing "hate speech." But when it turned out leftists had distributed the fliers, the matter was dropped faster than Larry Craig was dropped from Mitt Romney's campaign.
The one real example of racism on a college campus in recent memory was perpetrated against white men of the Duke lacrosse team. As that injustice was being perpetrated, gender and ethnic professors at Duke kept droning on about the "racism and sexism" students "live with every day" -- as the professors put it in an open letter that falsely presumed the players were guilty of rape. We don't expect a rally against the prejudiced professors, but an apology might be nice.
Playing the game of He Who Is Offended First Wins, Americans seek status not by claiming to be rich or of royal lineage, but by portraying themselves as victims. In one recent hoax hate crime, a white woman professor at Claremont McKenna College said her car had been vandalized with racist and anti-Semitic graffiti, with the words "Shut Up!" spray-painted on the hood of her car.
She was not black or Jewish, but had recently converted to Judaism and spoke out against racism. So she was a victim! After the vandalism of her car, she promptly became Queen for a Day. Far from "silenced," this anonymous mountebank was given a national microphone to bore us with her race-gender-culture theories. The campus was shut down for a day for anti-racism rallies in the charlatan's honor. Then eyewitnesses identified her as the one who had spray-painted her own car, and the pity party was over.
These liberal racism-hunters are like dirty old men who spend their days poring through pornography in order to better denounce it -- but enough about the Warren court.
Assuming against all reason and experience that the Columbia noose is not another hoax by a high-status victim, how is it that a pimply adolescent can cause such tumult in liberal New York City?
Liberals claim to believe the Klan has established a beachhead at Columbia University, Bill O'Reilly is head of the Manhattan branch, Rush Limbaugh despises the troops, I'm planning a pogrom from the heart of Manhattan, and George Bush is establishing fascism in America.
Some anonymous liberal hag on Air America Radio, which no one knew was still on the air, fell down outside her Park Avenue apartment this week, and her liberal colleagues were claiming it was Kristallnacht.
If it rains after a liberal washes his car, they say it's a right-wing dirty trick.
Liberals love nothing more than these constant self-righteous-athons -- as if they would ever have the courage to stand up for any cause not universally supported by everyone around them.

Armed standoff along U.S. border

Police face Mexican military, smugglers
By Sara A. Carter and Kenneth Todd Ruiz, Staff Writers
Mexican soldiers and civilian smugglers had an armed standoff with nearly 30 U.S. law enforcement officials on the Rio Grande in Texas Monday afternoon, according to Texas police and the FBI.

Mexican military Humvees were towing what appeared to be thousands of pounds of marijuana across the border into the United States, said Chief Deputy Mike Doyal, of the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Department.
Mexican Army troops had several mounted machine guns on the ground more than 200 yards inside the U.S. border -- near Neely's Crossing, about 50 miles east of El Paso -- when Border Patrol agents called for backup. Hudspeth County deputies and Texas Highway patrol officers arrived shortly afterward, Doyal said.
"It's been so bred into everyone not to start an international incident with Mexico that it's been going on for years," Doyal said. "When you're up against mounted machine guns, what can you do? Who wants to pull the trigger first? Certainly not us."
An FBI spokeswoman confirmed the incident happened at 2:15 p.m. Pacific Time.
"Bad guys in three vehicles ended up on the border," said Andrea Simmons, a spokeswoman with the FBI's El Paso office. "People with Humvees, who appeared to be with the Mexican Army, were involved with the three vehicles in getting them back across."
Simmons said the FBI was not involved and referred inquiries to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
ICE did not return calls seeking comment.
Doyal said deputies captured one vehicle in the incident, a Cadillac Escalade reportedly stolen from El Paso, and found 1,477 pounds of marijuana inside. The Mexican soldiers set fire to one of the Humvees stuck in the river, he said.
Doyal's deputies faced a similar incident on Nov. 17, when agents from the Fort Hancock border patrol station in Texas called the sheriff's department for backup after confronting more than six fully armed men dressed in Mexican military uniforms. The men -- who were carrying machine guns and driving military vehicles -- were trying to bring more than three tons of marijuana across the Rio Grande, Doyal said.
Doyal said such incidents are common at Neely's Crossing, which is near Fort Hancock, Texas, and across from the Mexican state of Chihuahua.
"It happens quite often here," he said.
Deputies and border patrol agents are not equipped for combat, he added.
"Our government has to do something," he said. "It's not the immigrants coming over for jobs we're worried about. It's the smugglers, Mexican military and the national threat to our borders that we're worried about."
Citing a Jan. 15 story in the Daily Bulletin, Reps. David Dreier, R-Glendora, and Duncan Hunter, R-San Diego, last week asked the House Judiciary Committee, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, the House Homeland Security Committee and the House International Relations Committee to investigate the incursions. The story focused on a Department of Homeland Security document reporting 216 incursions by Mexican soldiers during the past 10 years and a map with the seal of the president's Office of National Drug Control Policy, both of which were given to the newspaper.
Requests by Dreier, chairman of the House Rules Committee, and Hunter were made in jointly signed letters.
On Wednesday, Chertoff played down the reports of border incursions by the Mexican military. He suggested many of the incursions could have been mistakes, blaming bad navigation by military personnel or attributing the incursions to criminals dressed in military garb.
Mexican officials last week denied any incursions made by their military.
But border agents interviewed over the past year have discussed confrontations those they believe to be Mexican military personnel.
"We're sitting ducks," said a border agent speaking on condition of anonymity. "The government has our hands tied."

Feds Recommend Closing Saudi School in Virginia

**
Thu, Oct 18, 2007 at 8:32:53 am PDT
The Saudis have been quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) infiltrating America for decades, spending billions of oil dollars to build mosques and hardline religious schools in nearly every state of the union. But now there appears to be at least one government agency that is awake to the danger.
...
McLEAN, Va. - A private Islamic school supported by the Saudi government should be shut down until the U.S. government can ensure the school is not fostering radical Islam, a federal panel recommends.
In a report released Thursday, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom broadly criticized what it calls a lack of religious freedom in Saudi society and promotion of religious extremism at Saudi schools.Particular criticism is leveled at the Islamic Saudi Academy, a private school serving nearly 1,000 students in grades K-12 at two campuses in northern Virginia’s Fairfax County. The commission’s report says the academy hews closely to the curriculum used at Saudi schools, which they criticize for promoting hatred of and intolerance against Jews, Christians and Shiite Muslims.“Significant concerns remain about whether what is being taught at the ISA promotes religious intolerance and may adversely affect the interests of the United States,” the report states. The commission, a creation of Congress, has no power to implement policy on its own. Instead, it makes recommendations to other agencies. The commission does not offer specific criticism of the academy’s teachings beyond its concerns that it too closely mimics a typical Saudi education...

Man crisscrossed border with TB

Amado Isidro Armendariz Amaya, of Chihuahua, Mexico, who authorities say has a highly contagious form of tuberculosis, entered the United States 76 times between Aug. 14, 2006, and May 31, 2007.

A Mexican national infected with a highly contagious form of tuberculosis crossed the U.S. border 76 times and took multiple domestic flights in the past year, according to Customs and Border Protection interviews and documents obtained by The Washington Times.
The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency was warned by health officials on April 16 that the frequent traveler was infected, but it took Homeland Security officials more than six weeks to issue a May 31 alert to warn its own border inspectors, according to Homeland Security sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution. Homeland Security took a further week to tell its own Transportation Security Agency.
Multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a highly contagious illness and also resistant to the two most commonly used drugs to treat TB.
It is the same dangerous strain of tuberculosis that concerned health officials when Andrew Speaker, a 31-year-old Atlanta lawyer, slipped into the U.S. from Europe via a flight to Canada. The story set off alarms that the system had failed to identify the contagious passenger, which led to congressional hearings in June...

MI: ILLEGAL ALIEN from Albania Charged with RAPING AN 83-YEAR-OLD-WOMAN

Police: Illegal Immigrant Charged With Raping Elderly Woman
Monday, October 15, 2007
An illegal Albanian immigrant was arraigned at the 42-2 District Court in Macomb County on criminal sexual conduct and home invasion charges Monday.
Police said 28-year-old Altin Shabi sexually assaulted an 83-year-old woman inside of her Willows Apartment Complex On Carlos Road, between Gratiot Avenue and Interstate 94, in Chesterfield on Aug. 26.
The victim was inside her apartment when Shabi allegedly entered by removing the window screen and opening the bedroom window, according to police.
When the victim declined Shabi’s demand to have sex with him, police said he sexually assaulted her.
Police said they believe Shabi, also a Willows Apartment resident, was responsible for a string of peeping Tom incidents in the complex.
Another resident in the apartment told police someone tried to enter her apartment last November, and offered them the same description as the elderly victim.
“Based on the description of the complainant in this case and other similar complainants, we identified a drawing. It was then circulated, and numerous tips came in, the tips specifically lead to this arrest,” said Chesterfield Township Police Sgt. Brad Kersten.
Shabi was an Albanian natural and has been in the United States illegally since 2004. He was denied political asylum and failed to comply with deportation orders.
Shabi was issued a $500,000 bond and is currently being held up in the Macomb County Jail.
“It’s a relief to people in the community… and people here in the department,” said Kersten.

Crime and Rhetoric - T. Sowell

**
As the rates of imprisonment declined, crime rates soared -- whether in England, Australia, New Zealand or the United States.
"England is rapidly becoming a place where the good are afraid of the bad and the bad are not afraid of anything." - Peter Hitchens
**
Crime and Rhetoric
By Thomas Sowell
Wednesday, October 17, 2007
Oakland, California, continues to suffer the high crime rate, and especially the high murder rate, which has long afflicted that city. Judging by a recent speech by its current mayor, long-time leftist Ron Dellums, it can look forward to a future all too much like its past.
Why is Oakland so crime-ridden? According to Mayor Dellums, "we have closed our eyes to the injustices and inequities, and now we are reaping the wild winds of that disregard for a whole range of people."
This is the "root causes of crime" rhetoric of the 1960s, still going strong on the left today, despite mountains of evidence to the contrary that have accumulated in the decades since then.
That is what makes Oakland's problem more than just Oakland's problem -- or even America's problem. The same kind of thinking prevails on the left in other countries, producing the same kinds of dire results.
As British writer Peter Hitchens put it: "England is rapidly becoming a place where the good are afraid of the bad and the bad are not afraid of anything."
He also said, "The sheer concrete-headed stupidity of most political statements about crime defies belief." Both statements would apply as much in Oakland as they do in London -- and in many other places in between.
A newspaper account of Oakland mayor Ron Dellums' speech said that he was "clearly comfortable with what he was conveying and speaking without notes."
Why should he be uncomfortable or need notes to be repeating the same politically correct notions that the entire left -- here and overseas -- has been repeating like a mantra for nearly half a century? Would you need notes to recite the alphabet?
The idea that "injustices and inequities" explain crime goes back more than two centuries. You can find it in William Godwin's 1793 book, "Enquiry Concerning Political Justice" in England and even earlier in a number of writers in France.
It is the hallmark of the left around the world.
While such ideas have been around for centuries, they did not become the dominant ideas among those making legal and political policy until the second half of the 20th century -- more specifically, the 1960s in the United States.
What was crime like in 1960, before these ideas took over in our courts and in the legislative and executive branches of government?
As of 1960, the murder rate had been going down for decades -- among blacks and whites alike -- and was just under half of what it had been back in 1934.
Were there no "injustices and inequities" in 1960 and in the prior decades? No one who is old enough to remember those times could believe that.
It was precisely the rise to power in the 1960s (in the courts as well as in politics) of those who believed that "injustices and inequities" were the causes of crime which marked a de-emphasis on law enforcement and imprisonment -- and marked one of the most dramatic increases in crime in our history.
Having declined for decades on end, the murder rate suddenly doubled between 1961 and 1974. The rate at which citizens became victims of violent crimes in general tripled.
Such trends began at different times in different countries but the patterns remained very similar. As the rates of imprisonment declined, crime rates soared -- whether in England, Australia, New Zealand or the United States.
After a whole generation of crime victims were sacrificed on the altar to the theories of the left, a political backlash produced higher rates of imprisonment -- and lower rates of crime -- in all these countries in the late 20th century.
We are still not back to where we were in 1960, as regards either the level of crime or the downward trend in murder rates. The notions of the left are still going strong in the media, in academia, and in politics.
The left is still comfortable talking about "injustices and inequities" -- even without notes -- and certainly without confronting the vast amount of evidence that they are wrong.

Rod Dreher: The Galling Arrogance of Mexico
The idea that Mexican nationals here need an "anti-defamation league" entails the obnoxious notion that to oppose illegal immigration is, on its face, a racist position.
That's precisely the stance Mexican consulates have taken in other cases, Ms. Mac Donald reports. The Mexican consul in Boston, for example, vigorously protested the arrest and criminal trespass trial of four illegals as "discriminatory and a violation of human rights."
"This is our culture - fight for it. This is our flag - pick it up. This is our country - take it back." --- Presidential candidate Tom Tancredo
We, as a nation, stand on the precipice of our own cultural disintegration. Our culture stands in the crosshairs of clashing civilizations via importation of millions of immigrants from incompatible cultures.
This week, in Denver, Colorado, immigrants want Halloween celebrations taken out of the school systems. Peter Boyles, talk jock of KHOW 630 AM said, “Next they will demand Thanksgiving be taken away from us.” Americans like Boyles do the job Congress refuses to do! 20 million to 38 million illegal immigrants in America

Immigration strategies taking shape
By JULIE MASON
Houston Chronicle
10.4.07

In separate rooms on overlapping morning hours at the National Press Club this week, two very different groups were launching the next rounds in the simmering immigration fight.
In the Zenger Room, named for German immigrant John Peter Zenger, who helped establish free speech law, Californians for Population Stabilization released a study claiming there are 20 million to 38 million illegal immigrants in America, not the 12 million the federal government says.
"Immigration is in a state of anarchy," organization member James Walsh, a former Immigration and Naturalization Service lawyer, fervently told the room. "Not chaos, anarchy."
Two doors down in the Murrow Room, named for American broadcaster Edward R. Murrow, the Spanish-language network Telemundo debuted a series of upbeat public service announcements urging their audience to register and vote.
News anchor Jose Diaz-Balart said Telemundo wants to leverage the passion from last year's immigration rallies into a stronger turnout among Latinos, who historically vote at disproportionately low rates.
"Hispanics in the U.S. will now have a way to channel all that frustration and do some good," Diaz-Balart said.
Whether the two groups were aware of each other, neither side let on. But each represents emerging new strategies stirring out of the void left by the failure of immigration reform.
The population group from California believes its more alarming population figures, which are not credited or supported by other independent research, will result in tougher policies on immigration.
Result of mistrustDiana Hull, a behavioral scientist and former Houstonian who is president of Californians for Population Stabilization, said the federal government's alleged undercount of illegal immigrants is partly the result of mistrust.
"We have a very large group of people who don't have the same feeling about responding to legitimate questions from their government," Hull said.
For example, she said, large numbers of illegal immigrants living in a single house may not tell a census-taker how many people are really living there.
"The fact of the matter is they don't answer the question," she said.
The population figure presented by the group was tabulated by Fred Elbel, a computer specialist and anti-immigration activist from Colorado. The Social Contract Press, which published his report, also publishes racist works, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Around the corner at the Telemundo event, cheery VJ "Crash" had her own statistic that would no doubt alarm the population stabilization group in the Zenger room.
She said 50,000 Hispanics turn 18 in this country every month, and not enough are registering to vote.
"I am super-excited for this upcoming election, and I really feel like this time we are going to make a difference," Crash said.
Added Alfredo Richard, senior vice president of communications and talent development for the network, "It's not enough to grow in numbers, but to gain in political strength."

Mexico re: Al Qaeda - a veiled threat to American Patriots

**
Mexico and Al Qaeda
Should anyone not see the necessity for taking action against illegal immigration within the USA and from the border, read this from the radical Mexican group - an anti-American, leftist, anti-Jewish group and Al-Qaeda sympathizer.
Pay special attention to the last two paragraphs. This article was written in September 2007.

Aztlan Communications Network
This is an invitation for all peace loving citizens of the Americas and from around the world to join this Internet news and information service in a unique effort to establish friendship among all people regardless of nationality, race or religion. Those who are informed on current world events know that the entire globe is edging closer and closer to a dark and ominous precipice from which there may be no return. Today, through the miracle of mass communication, such as the Internet, we are seeing images of unimaginable horror and are learning for the first time about the evil ones behind these atrocities against human beings.
The situation is particularly ominous in the United States. Some elements of the US government and certain other sectors of US society have managed, in a few decades, to turn most of the world against all Americans. The USA now has very few friends. There are many good Americans who do not deserve the disrespect, hate and animosity of the world. These good Americans must work to turn the situation around. Americans deserve to live in peace and harmony and not in constant fear of the next terrorist attack.
Americans are not just being imperiled from abroad by unconscionable warmongers but they are also being imperiled from within by a small number of domestic hatemongers. These hatemongers are few but are very loud. The loud and hateful speech by a few Americans in the current immigration debate is just one example of how the majority of good Americans are being placed in danger. It is extremely foolish to alienate Mexico and its people especially when a 2,000 mile border is shared between the two countries. We ask, is it not better to extend the hand of friendship than build a wall between two neighbors?
The war in Iraq is not going very well for the United States. We have seen the terrible carnage in Baghdad and can not say for sure if Islam will ever forgive the country. One thing we do know is that Iran has extended the hand of friendship to Latin America. Hugo Chavez of Venezuela has had frequent visits to Iran and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran to Venezuela and other Latin American countries.
Last week, Mexican insurgents bombed PEMEX natural gas and oil facilities. We see strong possibilities that Mexican insurgent groups will soon make connections with al-Queda, if they have not done so already. What are the possible repercussions for peace loving Americans if the alienation of Mexico and its people continues? If a linkup of al-Queda with Mexican insurgents becomes a reality, the security of the vast 2,000 mile border would be greatly jeopardized. Building a border wall will not minimize the danger.
The best course of action is to start re-building the friendship that once existed between the two countries. It is with this in mind that we have created Project Amigos. We invite all people and especially good Americans to join us. We must neutralize the world's warmongers and internal hatemongers and promote friendship between all cultures, races, national groups and religions if we are to survive and live in peace and harmony.
Help us in this worthy effort.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali ‘Forced’ to Return to the Netherlands

The Cost of Protection from Islamists is too Expensive
Thursday, October 04, 2007
Fear of fanatical Islamists prompted Ayaan Hirsi Ali to leave the Netherlands, her adopted home, and now she has been forced to return.
Paying for her bodyguards in the United States is too expensive for the Dutch government -- what a disgrace.
There are exactly five people that the Dutch government has to protect against death threats from radical Islamists.
This sort of protection is expensive. Society bears the costs because freedom of opinion, a cornerstone of our culture, is on the line. The extremists, for their part, are prepared to risk their own lives to kill those under government protection.
The costs of protection are completely disproportionate to the outcome: the continued existence of our values and norms.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali is the sixth person granted protection by the Dutch government. She began receiving threats when, as a Dutch citizen and member of the parliament, she spoke out critically against political Islam. After the so-called "passport scandal," when the Dutch minister of immigration and integration threatened to confiscate her passport after Ayaan had been accused of lying about her name and birth date when she first arrived in the Netherlands, she moved to the United States, which precipitated a sharp upswing in her career within only a few months. She wrote a bestseller and landed a job at the American Enterprise Institute. But as a Dutch citizen, Ayaan does not qualify for protection in the United States under US laws and regulations.
Contrary to what many in the Netherlands believe about the success of her autobiography, she is not wealthy. She could not pay for the kind of protection she needs out of her own pocket -- no matter how much she would like to do so. Besides, the Dutch government apparently failed to find the right US officials with whom they could have reached an agreement. Under a decision by Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Balin, the protection paid for by the Dutch government expired on Oct. 1. Ayaan returned to the Netherlands, because without protection she doesn't have a day left to live.

Dubai-based company purchases SC land for distribution center

Oct 3, 2007 07:02 PM EDT
ORANGEBURG, SC (AP) - A Dubai-based company looking to build a logistics center and business park in Orangeburg County has purchased about 1,300 acres of land near Santee.
Jafza International managing director Chuck Heath says the company thinks Orangeburg has the potential to become a major logistical hub in the United States.
Jafza officials will begin negotiating the details of its investment with state and local officials in the next few weeks.
The company says it plans to invest about $600 million and ultimately hire about 8,000 workers.
Jafza International is a sister company of DP World, which initially won federal approval last year to run six major US ports before congressional objections caused the deal to fall through.

In what federal authorities are calling the largest sweep of criminal and fugitive immigrants, federal agents over the past two weeks have arrested more than 1,300 Southland immigrants in their homes, in jails and at work, officials announced Wednesday.
As part of a stepped-up national crackdown on illegal immigrants, five teams of Immigration and Custom Enforcement agents raided homes in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties from Sept. 19 through Tuesday.
Some arrests were easy, while others involved agents peering into clothes dryers or squeezing deep into crawl spaces to find hidden suspects. Most of those arrested were from Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala.
"Too often in the past, (deportation) orders were ignored and aliens thought that after getting an order of removal they could slip back into society," said Julie Myers, assistant secretary for ICE. "Those days are no longer."

Muslims In Toronto

Also banned, it says, are: watching sports or soap operas, walking dogs, family photos, wedding bands, Western hats, mingling and shaking hands with the opposite sex.
**
TORONTO - A Toronto mosque is telling Muslims not to say “Happy Thanksgiving” or invite friends into their homes for turkey dinner on the holiday weekend.
The Khalid Bin Al-Walid Mosque says to “avoid participating” in dinners, parties or greetings on Thanksgiving because it is a kuffaar, or non-Muslim, celebration.
A two-part article on the mosque Web site says Muslims should also “stay completely away” from “Halloween trick-and treat nonsense,” Christmas, New Year’s, anniversaries, birthdays and Earth Day.
“How can we bring ourselves to congratulate or wish people well for their disobedience to Allah? Thus expressions such as:Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Birthday, Happy New Year, etc, are completely out,” it says.
In 2003, the Khalid mosque, which mainly serves the Toronto Somali-Canadian community, apologized for a newsletter that compared wishing someone a Merry Christmas to congratulating a murderer.
At the time, a junior employee was blamed for the slight, but the mosque’s Web site has since posted similar edicts covering not only Christmas but also virtually every other Western celebration.
Muslims who participate in the holidays are termed ignorant and hypocritical.
While not all are religious holidays, the Internet site says Muslims are required to be different from non-Muslims “in matters which are representative of them or are characteristic of their identity.”
Also banned, it says, are: watching sports or soap operas, walking dogs, family photos, wedding bands, Western hats, mingling and shaking hands with the opposite sex.

Detroit immigration official charged with bribery

A top immigration official in Detroit has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly accepting tens of thousands of dollars in bribes to release aliens who were facing deportation -- including two registered sex offenders -- and facilitating other immigration frauds.

Two well-known Dearborn restaurant owners -- Talal Chahine of LaShish Restaurants and Samir Leon of Leon's Family Dining -- are also involved in the corruption scandal. Chahine, a fugitive, is charged in the indictment. Leon is not charged but is identified in the indictment as restaurant owner "Samir L.," who allegedly paid bribes to the immigration official.
Roy M. Bailey, 54, of Romulus, who was assistant director for the Immigration and Naturalization Service field office in Detroit and director for detention and removal operations, is charged with accepting bribes, conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit extortion by a public official, conspiracy to defraud the federal government and failing to report a felony.
"Our office considers this to be an outright selling of one's office," said U.S. Attorney Stephen Murphy. "These sorts of corruption matters are among the most serious that we take."
Bailey, who is expected to voluntarily surrender to federal authorities in the next few days, has been on paid administrative leave since February, 2005, an official said. His most recent title, after INS was rolled into the Department of Homeland Security, was acting field office director for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Detroit.
"Mr. Bailey is innocent of all the charges in the indictment and he will be pleading not guilty at the first opportunity," said Michael Starr, Bailey's Washington, D.C. attorney.
"He will fight to be cleared of these charges and to restore his stellar reputation."
Two of the people Bailey is accused of illegally releasing from federal custody appear on the Michigan State Police Sex Offender Registry.
Antonio "Tony" Ivezaj, 39, of Milford, who is also charged in the indictment, was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 1993 after an Oakland County jury convicted him of third-degree sexual conduct. Ivezaj was released from state prison in 1998, records show. According to the indictment, Ivezaj paid Bailey more than $5,000 in bribes between 1999 and 2003 and Bailey released Ivezaj from custody while he was awaiting deportation.
Ivezaj was arraigned in federal court today on bribery and conspiracy charges and held pending a detention hearing Thursday. He is represented by the Federal Defender Office and his attorney declined comment.
Another man Bailey allegedly released from federal custody in return for a bribe, Salim Kriko, 68, of West Bloomfield, has a conviction for second-degree sexual conduct, according to the state Sex Offender Registry. Kriko, who was represented by an immigration attorney who allegedly paid bribes to Bailey, was released by Bailey in 2000, the indictment alleges. Kriko is not charged in the indictment.
Part of the broader scam involved a fraud whereby LaShish Restaurants employees were able to stay in the country through fraudulent marriages to other LaShish employees, according to the grand jury indictment unsealed today.
Chahine, 52, owner of LaShish and already a fugitive on criminal tax charges believed to be living in Lebanon, is one of five defendants named in the indictment.
It was not clear how much in total bribes Bailey is accused of accepting, but officials said it exceeds $50,000 in cash, jewelry, home improvements, landscaping and casino chips.
In addition to releasing and adjusting terms for aliens who were supposed to be deported, Bailey brought a gun across the border from Windsor for Leon, who gave him more than $10,000 in bribes for various favors, the indictment alleges.
Leon is well-known for serving the needy free turkey dinners at his seven Metro Detroit restaurants on the day before Thanksgiving.
Leon and his attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.
Bailey, who accepted free meals worth more than $5,000 at one of Leon's restaurants, also allowed an associate of Leon's to enter the U.S. from Syria based on fraudulent documents, the indictment alleges.
Bailey is also accused of failing to report the theft of more than $300,000 from aliens housed at a deportation center in Monroe. Patrick Wynne, a former detention officer there, was sentenced to 57 months in prison in January 2006 for his role in those thefts.
Ivezaj had a Ferndale construction company, TMI Construction Co., which did more than $5,000 in free residential construction work for Bailey, the indictment alleges. Ivezaj also obtained $50,000 in 2003 on behalf of another person in immigration custody who was released by Bailey at about the same time, the indictment alleges.
Chahine is not accused in the indictment of paying bribes to Bailey, but of conspiracy to commit extortion by a public official.
The indictment alleges Chahine obtained more than $250,000 in cash and real estate from the family of a Lebanese man through extortion.
Also named in the indictment is Mohamad Arzouni, 59, of Dearborn Heights, identified as a LaShish employee, and Mohammad Bazzi, 61, a relative of Chahine's and a LaShish employee from 2001 to 2005. Bazzi, formerly of Detroit, is not yet in custody and may be in Australia, officials said.
Arzouni and Bazzi are each charged with conspiracy to defraud the federal government.
Murphy said the case is serious but he believes it is an isolated incident and he does not believe there is widespread corruption in the federal immigration service.

Welcome to George Soros’s America

MoveOn.org bullies crack down on critics.
By Michelle Malkin
National Review

MoveOn.org, the left-wing extremists who bashed the commander of American forces in Iraq as a traitor, should get out of the political kitchen. The George Soros-funded hitmen can’t stand even a bit of heat from Mom-and-Pop retailers who tried selling t-shirts and mugs on the Internet critical of the “General Betray Us” smear ads against Gen. David Petraeus.
I heard from one of the independent T-shirt sellers targeted by MoveOn.org last week. The seller is a lifelong Democrat and member of the military. Incensed by the attack on Gen. Petraeus, the retailer opened up a shop at online store CafePress. The homemade designs at the PoliStew Cafe were stark and simple: “Move Away from Move On!” “MoveOn.org NoFriend to Dems.” “General Petraeus has done more for this country than MoveOn.org.”
For daring to raise a voice and raise some money for the troops (all proceeds from the sale of his items go to the National Military Family Association charity), this t-shirt seller earned the wrath of MoveOn.org’s lawyers. MoveOn.org chief operating officer Carrie Olson brought down the sledgehammer. She sent a cease-and-desist letter to CafePress demanding that PoliStew Cafe’s items and other anti-MoveOn.org merchandise be removed from the store.
Olson warned: “We have been alerted to an entire page of items on your website that infringes on our registered trademark, and we request that you remove all items immediately, and ask the poster to refrain from shipping any items purchased on this webpage. We also request that you give us contact information for the company / person who posted the items. This content has certainly NOT been authorized by anyone at MoveOn.org, nor anyone affiliated with MoveOn.”
Acceptable speech to MoveOn.org: Likening President Bush to Adolf Hitler, as they did in 2004.
Unacceptable speech: Little old mugs and hoodie sweatshirts gently satirizing the thin-skinned, left-wing mafia.
The pretextual copyright infringement claims are downright laughable. This isn’t about protecting MoveOn.org’s property rights. It’s about shutting up citizens who don’t have the deep pockets to defend themselves against frivolous claims by bullies in progressive clothing. Sane liberals should be ashamed at such free speech-squelching efforts.
As Los Angeles Times blogger Jon Healey, the only other mainstream journalist to cover the crackdown, notes: “Trademark law doesn’t confer monopoly rights over all uses of a registered phrase or symbol, however, and it wasn’t created simply to protect the trademark owner’s interests. Instead, it’s designed to protect consumers against being misled or confused about brands. The courts have repeatedly ruled in favor of parodies and critiques; that’s why http://www.famousbrandnamesucks.com/ doesn’t violate famousbrandname’s trademark. And most, if not all, of the items targeted by MoveOn were clearly designed to razz it, not to trick buyers into thinking they were the group’s products."
CafePress refused to give in on several of the items. But the speech-chilling message is clear: Parody MoveOn.org and they’ll threaten to hunt you down and sue you. The PoliStew Cafe operator took down the pro-Petraeus, anti-MoveOn.org shirts and replaced them instead with merchandise referring to “THE GROUP THAT SHALL NOT BE NAMED.” An army of MoveOn mockers online has published photoshopped logos (“MoveOut.org,” “MoveOn.org: Surrender in Action”) in solidarity — daring the far-Left lawyers to sue them.
Edward Padgett, a Los Angeles blogger who spread the word about MoveOn’s attempt to silence critics, laments: “For several years I have found MoveOn.org to be an inspirational anti-war group, but the past few weeks they have been an embarrassment to all Americans with their attacks upon President Bush and General Petraeus. I subscribe to the MoveOn newsletter, and even considered hosting an antiwar rally in San Dimas, but now I want no part of this radical group and will remove my name from their newsletter subscription . . . I guess to MoveOn, the First Amendment is only for the rich.”
Dissent-silencing tactics approved, apparently, by the MoveOn.org Democrats who are too busy bashing Rush Limbaugh to notice the gagging of ordinary citizens on their own side of the political aisle.
Welcome to George Soros’s America.

Question of the Day...

Say you can go on a vacation - 3, 5 or even 7 days.
And you can travel through time/space...
The only rules are:
You cannot travel within your current lifespan (must be before your birth or safely past your life expectancy).
If you go into the future, you cannot bring anything back (technology, medicine, knowlege, lottery numbers).
If you go into the past you cannot live anyone else's life (be Henry VIII, for example) and you cannot change history (alas, you cannot kill Mohammed or save Jesus).
ALSO:
You will be like a movie extra. You will fit in racially, culturally. You will not draw much attention to yourself so as not to be hanged or burned at the stake, and you will not die of wounds or disease. You will be fully aware of all that is around you and will experience everything fully.
Now, when and where will you go?
