The much-maligned Republican 109th Congress passed immigration-enforcement legislation to build a 700-mile fence along the U.S.-Mexican border, without including an amnesty for illegal immigrants. President Bush has declared he will sign the bill today. How did this happen?

BRIDGEPORT - Borough Council adopted an ordinance banning illegal aliens from working or renting residences in Bridgeport Tuesday.

European Defence Agency paints grim picture of future
The European Union will become older, poorer and increasingly vulnerable to wide-scale immigration from its neighbours, according to a new European Defence Agency report.
The agency also highlights the problems of increasing unemployment and desertification in its 32-page "long-term vision" for European defence needs which will be presented to EU defence ministers meeting in Finland on Tuesday.
The document, described by one diplomat as "pretty bleak", is the result of a year's work identifying the main trends for EU member nations and their defence needs.
The overall picture is of an aging, less prosperous Europe surrounded by regions -- Africa, Middle East, Russia -- "which may be struggling to cope with the consequences of globalisation".

Denver Public Schools stagger under the crush of 30,000 illegal alien students with violence, drugs, one out of five teachers resigns every nine month teaching cycle, over a dozen foreign languages and a 67 percent drop out/flunk out rate. Tuberculosis pops up in Colorado with new cases in their schools. A similar scenario manifests across America depending on the number of illegal aliens in each state.
Violent crime rained down on Denver in October. One illegal alien dragged his girlfriend to death behind his car. Another illegal shot another illegal at a job site. Yet another illegal shot-gunned his girlfriend in the back because she wouldn’t reconcile with him! Still another illegal ran a stop sign a week ago. She crashed into a truck killing her three children. Last year, in Greeley, Colorado with 70,000 residents, they logged 571 hit and run accidents. That city houses the most illegal aliens in our state working at the meat packing plants.

Rather than scrimmage for nurses in the tight local market, East Jefferson General Hospital dispatched its chief operating officer in August to the Philippines, a former U.S. territory that annually sends thousands of English-speaking nurses overseas. Sixty-one Filipino nurses have agreed to trade in their meager wages for life in a struggling foreign city.
The immigration process is arduous, however, involving a visa application, background check and a nursing certification exam, and some of East Jefferson's newest workers will not arrive for six months to a year.
