Some 2,000 ultranationalist activists took to the streets of Moscow on Saturday in defiance of a ban to protest against illegal immigration and what they called the persecution of ethnic Russians.

The so-called Russian March-2006, timed to coincide with National Unity Day, was banned by Mayor Yury Luzhkov, who said such demonstrations "could destroy the unity of our society." A few hours after the ultranationalist event ended, some 1,000 anti-fascist activists gathered on Bolotnaya Ploshchad in a meeting organized by a coalition of liberal political parties and civil rights groups. Organizers of Russian March-2006 estimated that 7,000 ultranationalist activists had participated in the event citywide, and that 3,000 had been detained by police. "They were all released later because there were no grounds for holding them," said Vladimir Tor, a coordinator at the Moscow

headquarters of Russian March-2006.

Vladimir Bukovksy, the 63-year old former Soviet dissident, fears that the European Union is on its way to becoming another Soviet Union.
In a speech he delivered in Brussels last week Mr Bukovsky called the EU a "monster" that must be destroyed, the sooner the better, before it develops into a fullfledged totalitarian state.Mr Bukovsky paid a visit to the European Parliament on Thursday at the invitation of Fidesz, the Hungarian Civic Forum. Fidesz, a member of the European Christian Democrat group, had invited the former Soviet dissident over from England, where he lives, on the occasion of this year's 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Uprising.
After his morning meeting with the Hungarians, Mr Bukovsky gave an afternoon speech in a Polish restaurant in the Trier straat, opposite the European Parliament, where he spoke at the invitation of the United Kingdom Independence Party, of which he is a patron.An interview with Vladimir Bukovsky about the impending EUSSRIn his speech Mr Bukovsky referred to confidential documents from secret Soviet files which he was allowed to read in 1992. Democrat Keith Ellison Becomes First Muslim Lawmaker In Congress

Minneapolis, MN (AHN) - Democrat Keith Ellison has been elected as the nation's first Muslim member of Congress on Tuesday after winning the Minneapolis-area district.
Ellison, who is also Minnesota's first nonwhite representative in Washington, admitted to having mixed feelings about being the first Muslim congressman.
"I wasn't trying to make any kind of political statement about my identity or anything when I ran," he said.
"I think the most important thing about this race is we tried to pull people together on things we all share, things that are important to everyone. We all need peace, and this Iraq policy is dangerous to our country," said Ellison, who is in favor of troop withdrawal from Iraq.
"I don't believe in abandonment of Iraq, I just don't think that we're going to have a military solution," he said.
However, Ellison, who is black, says his main aim is to help others understand that Muslims have much to contribute to America.
He also added that Muslims should know they are "welcome to the table of American politics."

Islamists at this stage in the war, want to use our democratic process to render our security laws like the Patriotic Act toothless, so that the Islamist fascists can act with impunity. In order to bring our open society down, they are using every possible opportunity, like in today’s mid term elections, they want Democrats to win because they believe that Democrats will work to weaken the security apparatus as instituted by the Republicans to defeat the terrorists. After carefully examining the performance of democrats on the national security legislation and Islamists have ascertained that the democrats are the only group whose voting pattern tends to support terrorists’ rights over Americans’ rights. And that was enough for them to throw their weight behind the Democrats.
Convinced that once the Democrats will win the control of the House and Senate, they will either abrogate the security laws like the Patriotic Act or soften it so much that it will then easily be exploited by them, the Islamists have launched a concerted campaign to convince the Muslims to back the Democrats. The instructions and commands being issued from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan and other centers of global jihad are clear on the issue.
The Kuwaiti daily Al-Seyassah’s October 29 “Digest of Public Opinion” discussed the midterm elections, saying that if “extremists such as Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, and the Republicans at large rule longer, America will likely be transformed into a dictatorship and as such we expect that the situation currently existing in Guantanamo is likely to face the Americans themselves. … Consequently, most political observers are currently expecting the Republicans to incur an overwhelming defeat during the upcoming congressional elections.”
An editorial in the October 19–25 Egyptian state-run English-language weekly Al-Ahram said, “The Republican Party is in so much trouble it may risk a major confrontation in the Middle East before half-term congressional elections in November. Republicans are far behind in the polls.”

The columnist Sandy Shanks wrote on Al-Jazeera’s Web site on October 22, “If the Democratic Party seizes Congress or the Senate. … This might even open the door for impeachment,” He asked rhetorically, “How badly does Bush want to win next month?”

The August 30 edition of the London-based Arabic-language daily Asharq Al-Awsat featured “The U.S. Republican Party and Defeat,” an article by an Al-Arabiya TV host and columnist, Hussein Shobokshi. “The Republican Party is beginning to see the danger signs and recognize that the current administration will cause it to lose … and suffer a defeat in the next elections,” he wrote.

Recently, a group of Arab diplomats that included the leaders of Hamas and Islamic Jihad and Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki of Iran met in Damascus. Among the topics of discussion was the American elections, Mr. Mottaki called Mr. Bush a “loser” and said that after next week’s elections, the president will be politically paralyzed and unable to initiate any political moves.

As he discussed the upcoming elections before a crowd chanting “death to America, death to Israel,” Hojatoleslam Ahmad Khatami, who led last week’s Friday prayers in Tehran, said: “The savage and devilish acts and performances of Bush, as a Republican, have placed his party in a very critical condition.”

An editorial in the October 27 Saudi English-language daily Arab News said, “As the hours tick by to the November 7 midterm election, the Bush administration is wiggling frantically on the butcher’s hook.”

In 2006 America, tired of War in Iraq, had elected Democrats to modest majorities in both houses of Congress. Representative Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House, third in line for the presidency.

In the spring of 2007, on a narrow, party-line vote, Congress, led by Senators John Kerry and Ted Kennedy and Barbara Boxer refused to authorize spending to continue the war in Iraq, and set September 30, 2007, as the deadline for complete withdrawal of American troops.

Actress Adrienne Shelly's hanging death in her West Village office bathroom looked like suicide. It turned out to be murder.
The stunning whodunit was cracked yesterday after cops linked a bathtub sneaker print to a teen construction worker who allegedly snapped when Shelly made a noise complaint last week, sources said.
Diego Pillco, a 19-year-old illegal immigrant who had been renovating the apartment below Shelly's office, told cops in a chilling confession that he was afraid of getting arrested and deported, sources said.
So he followed the 40-year-old married mom of a toddler into her apartment and knocked her unconscious, sources said.
Pillco told police he panicked and staged a suicide - using a bedsheet to string up the petite actress by her neck from a shower curtain rod, sources said.

Has the United States ever engaged in a crusade against Islam? No, never. And, what's more, one of the country's earliest diplomatic documents rejects this very idea.
Exactly 210 years ago this week, toward the end of George Washington's second presidential administration, a document was signed with the first of two Barbary Pirate states. Awkwardly titled the "Treaty of Peace and Friendship, signed at Tripoli November 4, 1796 (3 Ramada I, A. H. 1211), and at Algiers January 3, 1797 (4 Rajab, A. H. 1211)," it contains an extraordinary statement of peaceful intent toward Islam.
The agreement's 11th article (out of twelve) reads: As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion, - as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen, - and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."
In June 1797, the Senate unanimously ratified this treaty, which President John Adams immediately signed into law, making it an authoritative expression of American policy...
