6 May 2007: Ayman al Zawahiri, al Qaeda's second in command and primary spokesman, appeared today in a newly released video sounding victorious about the implementation of a U.S. pullout from Iraq. Zawahiri makes it clear that the withdrawal of the American and coalition forces is a victory for the fighters of Islam against the crusaders of the West, and encourages unity among Islamic factions to insure that the process of "occupying forces" leaving will be maintained. Clearly, Zawahiri and the al Qaeda leadership are watching the U.S. political debate about the withdrawal of troops from Iraq, suggesting that Iraq will become an Islamic and al Qaeda stronghold in the absence of U.S. forces.
