The Utah Attorney General's Office offers these tips to help you and your child from becoming the next victims: Identify theft is the fastest growing financial crime in Utah.
Nearly 10 million Americans fall victim each year and Utahns are no exception. According to the Utah Assistant Attorney General Richard Hamp, there are 380,000 illegal immigrants in the Beehive State, and he estimated that 95 percent of those are using other people's Social Security numbers.
That percentage was gauged from the Department of Workforce Services database from the year 2000 where 132,000 Social Security numbers were found to be comprised. Since that was seven years ago, another mechanism used to assess stolen Social Security numbers was Operation Protect the Children.
