Canadian beaten into a coma in Mexico
Almost twice as many travelling Canadians were assaulted in Mexico than in any other foreign country so far this decade, federal figures released in March to CanWest News show.
A list of all assaults reported by Canadians this decade while travelling abroad show 172 incidents were reported to Foreign Affairs missions in Mexico during the past seven years.
In February, two Canadians were injured when a gunman fired into the lobby of a hotel in Acapulco.
In January, Adam DePrisco, 19, of Woodbridge, Ont. was killed outside an Acapulco nightclub. A Mexican doctor blamed the teen's death on a hit-and-run driver, but his family and friends believe he was beaten to death.
Also, in January, a man from Chatham, Ont. was struck by a car and killed in Guadalajara.
Domenic and Nancy Ianeiro, also of Woodbridge, were found murdered in their room at a resort in the Mayan Riviera in February 2006.
The Mexican government has fingered as prime suspects in the Ianeiro case two single mothers from Thunder Bay, Ont., Cheryl Everall and Kimberley Kim, despite reports implicating a hotel security guard who vanished after the Ianieros were murdered. Both women have vehemently denied the charges.

A Canadian vacationing in Mexico is clinging to life in hospital after he was apparently attacked in a Cancun resort.
Jeff Toews, 34, of Grande Prairie, Alta., was hospitalized with serious head and back injuries Monday after he was found by security guards on the grounds of the Moon Palace Resort.
"It's not good, it's not good," said Jeff's father Don Toews from the Hospital De La Americas in Cancun where Jeff is in an induced coma.
"It's such a mess going on with this Mexican Moon Palace Resort," said Murray Toews from his brother's bedside.
"It's disappointing that they're trying to cover up right here."
A spokesman for the family said Jeff Toews, who was vacationing with his wife Natalie and nine other couples from northern Alberta, received serious injuries to his head and back.
He said Toews was at a nightclub at the resort and was attacked while walking outside.
"He was on the resort property and somewhere between the nightclub and his room, something happened," said Kelvin Torgerson, a close friend and co-worker.
Torgerson said Murray Toews told him the resort is not being very co-operative and police have made no arrests...
