"He Loved Iraqis and He Wanted to Do Something to Help"
Many of you know the story of Steven Vincent, a great American and an outstanding human being, who was killed by Shia thugs in Iraq while researching a book he was writing about the Iraqi people. The other day, American Public Media interviewed his widow, Lisa Ramaci and Steven's Iraqi translator, Nour, who spent the last moments of his life with him, shot three times herself.
You can listen to the interview here (Quicktime mp3). It lasts about 40 minutes, but it's worth it. It will probably make you angry, and will definitely make you tear up a bit, but we should never forget exactly what it is we're up against. Steven was an exceptional person. By lagging behind when their captors told them to run, he put distance—and himself—between Nour and their guns. His memory is a precious reminder of the difference between freedom and love and fear and hate.
Lisa is currently working to help Nour secure U.S. citizenship. Nour is still in hiding.
