Tijuana Police Issued Slingshots

Disarmed cops go gunless as corruption probe goes ahead When Mexico's federal troops disarmed the police of Tijuana, the lawless city on the US border on January 5, the cops were left without weapons. Now sixty slingshots have been issued to beat cops along with a supply of ballbearings, according to spokesman Fernando Bojorquez. The disarmament of Tijuana's 2,000 officers -- who are famous for such functions as peddling marijuana to visiting Gringo college kids and steering likely prospects to area whorehouses -- was part of a "corruption probe" by President Felipe Calderon, who recently swiped the elections in a power-play that dragged Mexico even closer to the brink of civil war. Calderon sent 3300 federales to investigate claims that the Tijuana police force was a paid auxiliary of the drug- and people-smuggling cartels who run much of Mexico's economy. The confiscated weapons are supposedly being forensically examined to see if they were used in murders.While the slingshots are not exactly necessary, since city cops now are accompanied by state police, the mass confiscation wounded the macho pride of Tijuana's finest, who are using the slingshots to make a statement.
