Debate over immigration law reform has confounded many analysts who attempt to explain such issues solely in terms of political party ideologies. Both Republicans and Democrats have been on what, to many Americans, is the wrong side of the debate — an emphasis on various proposals that illegal aliens be given amnesty for their misdeeds.
But both Democrats and Republicans, in nearly equal numbers, have signed on to a new initiative to enact a reform measure. Co-sponsors of a reform bill introduced in the House of Representatives last week include 44 Democrats and 40 Republicans. Their proposal: Make enforcement of immigration law the top priority. Amnesty schemes need to be dropped.
One representative, Jason Altmire, D-Pa., touted the proposal as “the immigration reform bill the American people have been waiting for.”
That remains to be seen, of course, as the bill’s provisions receive scrutiny by the American people. At least the bill’s co-sponsors seem finally to have gotten the simple, basic message from voters — that the vast majority of Americans do not favor amnesty in any form for illegal aliens.
