10 July 2007: Investigation conducted by the Northeast Intelligence Network to be detailed in the upcoming issue of the HQ INTEL-ALERT Private Intelligence Report, it was found that bulk purchases of cellular telephones by men of Middle Eastern appearance are continuing at an alarming rate across the U.S. This agency previously reported the ties between the cellular telephone purchases and terrorist activities. Our investigation revealed that in some cases, the telephones are being shipped overseas, where many might be finding their way to Iraq where they are being used as detonation devices for improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
At a time when it is, or should be patently clear to federal investigators that these purchases are not benign enterprises, there appears to be little being done to stop or track the individuals making these purchases. In August 2006, we reported about two Middle Eastern men who are also Muslim from Dearborn, Michigan who admitted buying more than 600 phones in a 2 week period, and had airplane passenger lists and information on airport security checkpoints in their car. In that instance, the men were arrested, however reports of bulk purchases under similar circumstances and in many cases are continuing unabated.
