America Fights Back

Chicago Sun-Times:
Promises, promises, promises. We are hearing all sorts of promises from our elected leaders and those vying for the presidency. Among the most bizarre of promises was that the immigration measure temporarily defeated in the Senate could solve the growing problem of 12 million illegal aliens. It's a hollow promise. This Senate bill was filled with loopholes big enough to drive busloads of illegals through. But, rather than merely opposing it, senators ought to be putting options on the table now -- genuine steps that can be taken to solve the problem of millions people from points around the globe who have crossed our borders illegally.

CNN Lou Dobbs - video:
President Bush today made a rare trip to Capitol Hill to save his so-called grand compromise on comprehensive immigration reform, or amnesty. After meeting with Republican senators, President Bush declared, "Now is the time to get it done." But many Republican senators remain bitterly opposed to any legislation that would give amnesty from anywhere to 12 to 20 million illegal aliens. One leading Republican, Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL), simply told the president to "back off". Bush adopted a conciliatory tone, not his vintage swagger, telling senators right off the bat that he came to listen to Republican concerns about immigration, not twist arms. GOP senators told the president about the pummeling they're getting from constituents who just don't trust the government to make good on the immigration bill's promise to secure the border. Georgia's two Republican senators asked Bush to show conservatives he's committed to border security by paying for it now.
