Judge lashes out after man, 27, seeks attorney who’s Spanish-speaking

The trial of a man charged with dragging a woman off a Morristown sidewalk and raping her was put on hold Wednesday after he demanded a new attorney, his fifth in 21 months.
Superior Court Judge Joseph A. Falcone, sitting in Morristown, agreed to relieve the latest lawyer for suspect Joel A. Romero, 27, because Romero refuses to speak to counsel Douglas Del Tufo and claims he does not have "his best interests at heart."

Bay Area civil rights groups filed a lawsuit Thursday on behalf of a seven-year-old boy, a U.S. citizen by birth, who was detained for 10 hours by immigration agents, after arresting the boy’s father on an immigration violation last month.
Lawyers said it’s the first time they’ve documented a U.S. citizen, the child of an immigrant, detained in the federal government’s crackdown on illegal immigrants called "Operation Return to Sender."

The Classic Hand Car Wash in Costa Mesa remained closed Thursday, a day after its manager died after being run over by an SUV allegedly driven by a co-worker.
Eduardo Rodriguez, 35, of Costa Mesa was pronounced dead at the scene of the 4:10 p.m. Wednesday crash, according to police.
His co-worker, Elias Escalante-Izara, 25, was arrested on suspicion of driving without a license and booked at Costa Mesa Jail, where he was placed on an immigration hold, police said.

A small Border Patrol airplane went down a few miles north of the Hidalgo county line. A plane on routine patrol ends tragically for 10 year Border Patrol agent Clinton B. Thrasher when his plane crashes to the ground on a ranch in Brooks County.
Agents on the scene tell Action 4 News the Cessna 182 was last heard from Wednesday afternoon. U. S. Customs and Border Protection released a statement earlier Wednesday evening, it reads: "Agent Clinton B. Thrasher lost his life in a tragic aircraft accident while protecting our country and preserving our way of life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Thrasher family as we support them during this very difficult time."
