School district: Graduations in churches are a necessity

TRENTON, N.J. -- The Newark school district's general counsel said Thursday that necessity drove officials to use churches for high school graduation ceremonies in recent years. It's a move that's now sparked a lawsuit from the state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, which argues that a graduation ceremony at a Baptist church last year violated a Muslim student's religious freedom.
The school district plans to fight the lawsuit, arguing it didn't have a choice, that there were no large secular spaces available to handle the roughly 250 graduating seniors at West Side High School, said Perry Lattiboudere, the school district's general counsel.
