MI6 officers are to fly to America to grill a convicted London drug dealer, Christopher Benbow, about his "close connections" with al-Qaida.
For "national security reasons" no details of the links emerged in the Tampa, Florida, courthouse earlier this month when Benbow was sentenced to life.
The MI6 officers urgently want to know if, during his contacts with the terrorists, Benbow learned from where the materials originated. Was it Iran - or one of the nuclear dumps in the former Soviet Union arsenal? Both have stockpiles of the Strontium-90 he was prepared to peddle.
It is one of the components needed to create a dirty bomb. MI6 is satisfied that Benbow is more than a relatively small-time drug dealer who stumbled across an opportunity to make big-time money by brokering a deal for the nuclear materials.
