A Cobb County Sheriff’s Deputy was killed in a Sunday morning hit and run wreck in Marietta as he was going to work. The two suspects are in custody as deputies mourn the loss of one of their own.Deputy Loren Lilly had been with the department for 18 years.
Just before 6 a.m., Lilly was driving his green Honda Accord south on Powder Springs Street. Police say two men driving a white Ford Taurus made contact with Lilly’s car, sending him off the road, where he flipped several times. Lilly was pronounced dead at the scene.
“No one ever likes to roll up on an accident with anyone deceased on scene, or serious injuries,” said Marietta police officer Casey Camp. “Obviously, being in law enforcement, none of us wants to roll up and see one of our fellow officers or deputies on the scene as well.
"Witnesses say the driver and passenger in the white car ran. Police later arrested the two, 27-year-old Joel Perea, and 23-year-old Maurilio Herrera. Police say Perea is charged with felony vehicular homicide, hit and run, failure to maintain lane, and no drivers’ license. Herrera is charged with false report of a crime. The two men are at the Cobb County Jail. Police say that immigration officials have placed a hold on both men. Lilly, a 41-year-old Marietta resident, had worked for the sheriff's department since 1989. He was assigned to the jail division.
